Icing of power transmission lines during winter storms is a persistent problem that causes outgages and costs millions of dollars in repair expenses. De-icing methods using techniques such as high-frequency (8-200kHz) heating or circulation of short-circuit at rated line voltage are developed.

We developed an electro-mechanical de-icing machine that gets its power from the transmission line current. The application of electro-mechanical de-icing to melt ice on transmission power lines appears promising.
